Catechesis

Catechesis is the Church's way of teaching the faith.  More than simply education, catechesis is how faith is formed with and through the Word of God.  The term catechesis comes from the Greek word katecheo, which literally means, "with an echo."  Thus, faith is formed by echoing back what God says to us.

Below you will find resources for catechesis here at Emmanuel.
Catechesis at Emmanuel

Youth

Formal catechesis for youth at Emmanuel is a three-year curriculum that consists of Old Testament Catechesis and New Testament Catechesis during the first two years, culminating in Lutheran Catechesis in the final year.

Youth may begin this curriculum at any time with the consent of their parents and the pastor.  Generally, students will begin their first year no later than 5th grade.  However, it will be expected that the child will be able to recite by heart the Ten Commandments with their explanations and the Apostles' Creed with its explanations.

To assist parents and children, we also have an Introduction to Catechism class, which will focus on basic Bible stories and learning the Ten Commandments and the Creed.  This class is open to anyone in 2nd grade or higher, and may be repeated each year before beginning the first year of formal catechesis.

Adults

Adult catechesis is for adults wishing to be received into full fellowship in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  It is an approximately 24-week curriculum that will culminate in Holy Baptism (if needed) and reception to the Lord's Altar through the Rite of Confirmation.

Youth who will not be able to complete the entire three-year youth curriculum by the end of 8th grade will be referred to our adult catechesis.
